About this tool
A watermark answers a question every shared document raises: what is this, and whose is it? DRAFT across a proposal stops premature sign-offs; CONFIDENTIAL on a board pack sets expectations; a logo on every page of a portfolio claims authorship. This tool stamps text or images across your PDF with full control over how loud the statement is.
Text watermarks use bold type at any size, color, angle and opacity — the classic diagonal gray DRAFT is two clicks, but so is a subtle small-print notice in the corner. Image mode embeds your logo or stamp at any scale. Tiling repeats the watermark in a grid across the entire page, which is much harder to crop out than a single center stamp.
The layer choice matters more than people expect. Over content guarantees visibility even on pages with solid images, and keeps links and form fields working. Behind content looks more professional on text documents — the words read through the watermark — at the cost of rebuilding pages (which flattens interactive elements) and invisibility on fully-painted pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can a watermark be removed by someone else?
A determined person with editing tools can remove most watermarks. Tiled, over-content watermarks at moderate opacity are the most resistant. For actual protection, combine with the Protect PDF tool to restrict editing permissions.
Should I put the watermark over or behind the content?
Behind looks cleaner on text documents but disappears on pages with full-page images and flattens form fields. Over is always visible and keeps interactive elements working — it's the safer default.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Enter a page range like "2-" to skip a cover page, or "1, 5, 9" for specific pages only.
What image formats work for image watermarks?
PNG (including transparency — ideal for logos), JPG and WebP. Transparent PNGs blend most naturally with the page.
